To honor and recognize his remarkable 50 years of service and commitment to medical education at BWH and beyond, the hospital paid tribute to Dr. Wolf with a reunion celebration weekend April 5-6, 2013. More than 1,000 alumni turned out for the weekend series of events to show their appreciation for Marshall’s leadership and mentorship.

The weekend included many opportunities for graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency program to reconnect with fellow alumni and colleagues at events such as campus tours, a cocktail reception at The Harvard Club, panel discussions, and alumni dinners for individual classes.

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend was Saturday’s symposium. As a tribute to Dr. Wolf’s accomplishments as a teacher, mentor, and leader in medical education, the Marshall Wolf Symposium featured a dozen residency graduates who spoke about key challenges and advancements within their fields while reflecting on Dr. Wolf’s influence on their own careers.

Of course, a weekend with former residents would not be complete without Grand Rounds. On Friday morning Joel T. Katz, MD, Director of Internal Medicine Residency, presented Landmarks, Luminaries and Lessons: One hundred years of medical education innovation at the Brigham to a packed Cabot Atrium. Following Dr. Katz’s presentation attendees were also treated to a pleasant surprise. Friday’s morning report was led by Marshall himself in the Bornstein Amphitheater, which was filled to capacity with sweating former residents.

Other memorable moments included Saturday’s night gala dinner, where scores of attendees proudly wore their custom-made bowties to salute Dr. Wolf’s famous trademark. As Don Ganem, MD, PhD, pointed out at the day’s symposium, “This may be the largest gathering in history of people wearing a bowtie who had not previously tied one.”
